| This wood barrette was handcrafted from Birdseye Maple wood and is a size Medium. You can see a sample barrette in this wood above. Please note that this is a rectangle shaped barrette and the photo above is intended as a wood sample picture only. Your barrette may vary slightly from the picture as each piece of wood is unique and all of our barrettes are individually handcrafted. Our medium barrettes work well to pull back a section of normal thickness hair or all of fine hair. They measure approximately 3" long with a 70mm or 2 3/4" long clip.
Great Lakes Birdseye Maple is an extremely rare and prized variety of maple that gets its name from the tiny eyelike figures that swirl across its grain pattern.
Of all the "exotic" domestic hardwoods, bird's-eye maple (Acer saccharum) is perhaps the most highly prized, for it's distinctive clusters of "bird's eyes," those shimmering little bubbles of convoluted grain, often accompanied by satiny swirling grain or quilted figure. Few woods in the world are as dramatic, unique or sought after.
Many states in the Northeastern and North Central U.S. produce bird's-eye maple, but the best, finest textured wood comes from right here, in pristine Northern Michigan, where the climate and the soil provide ideal growing conditions for this rare and valuable timber. So, that's what you're getting when you buy my Birdseye barrettes - only the very best!
